Durand Bernarr Killed His Wanderlust Tour Brooklyn Performance
Durand Bernarr's New York tour stop would miss all the beautiful weather New York experienced during February. A week ago, sunny 60-degree weather graced New York Fashion Week, but NYC greeted Bernarr with residual slush storm puddles and freezing temperatures. However, the cold didn’t keep fans from seeing, "everybody’s favorite cousin on they daddy’s side."
The line wrapped around the corner as fans waited to get into the venue. "Me and Durand gon have a conversation," a young lady said as she and her homegirls walked toward the end of the line, still wrapping around the corner even as it was moving forward. The concert took place at Brooklyn Made. Once checked in, guest entered a ballroom illuminated with red lights and equipped with a stage, two bars, and a lounge/billiards area.
Teamarrr opened for Bernarr and performed a number of her records like "Chasing Amy," and paid tribute to New York native hip-hop natives Nicki Minaj and The Notorious B.I.G.. Durand Bernarr followed, taking the stage wearing a full-length hooded red fur coat, and a-shirt, baggy jeans, and a black double eyelet belt. After greeting his fans with a monologue, Durrand gave live renditions of "Curiosity," "Lil Bit," and "Boundaries" from his latest album, Wanderlust. His performance was a beautiful blend of blackness and queerness rooted in churchy vocals with a personable delivery. The line dancing, tambourine playing, exploration of vocal range and ability, and the freedom of expression as Durand grooved and high kicks across the stage; it was a good time performance that engaged the entire room.
As I smoked in line and waited to get into the show, I shared with a black woman in front of me, I'd never heard Durand Benarr's music before. "You're in for a real treat," she responded, not wanting to give too much away on what to expect. Girl you were right, Durand was a treat indeed.
