Big Style: The Biggest Fall 2020 Trends According To Black Designers
We’re back at it again gearing up for a new season to dress for, fall 2020. However, unlike autumns from seasons past, this the first time taking on this pandemic edition of the season known for its bubble coats and timberland boots. Covid-19 has certainly shifted the established ideas on how the fashion industry runs but what the virus can’t knock out is the desire to be stylish. So surely some that ride the wave of the style hype have bunkered down in their homes and minimizing their time outdoors. But, best believe they are also stocking up on the key trends for the upcoming season incases they do have to venture out -- won't catch a hypebeast slipping.
I should know because I’m once of those shoppers continuing to lace my wardrobe with dope designer finds. Peeling through sneaker blogs and menswear collections from the New York, London, Milan and Paris runways to decipher how I’ll take on fall in style. For now, we’ll shift our focus to the runways, that currently find themselves at the crossroads of riding the streetwear wave that won't die out—evident with the recent Dior x Air Jordan, Kenzo x Vans, Rick Owens x Champion collaborations—, and a return to the well-dressed man, rather he is traditionally dressed in a suit and classic menswear separates or dressing in experimental menswear silhouettes.
Below we’ll highlight the must-cop, must-rock trends of the season from the fall 2020 runways with a twist. As more black and brown designers and luxury brands continue to earn their rightful spots in mainstream fashion conversations (think Virgil Abloh, Kerby Jean-Raymond) doors have open for more creatives of color to walk through. With this in mind, we’ll be bringing you the fall 2020 trends from black fashion designers.
BIG DENIM ENERGY
Big baggy denim hasn’t been in style since the 90s-early 2000s and with most now preferring a slimmer, trimmer look --hey slim fit-- the idea of the trends return seems a bit dates. Never underestimate the power of oversized clothing. Wearing baggy denim from head to toe, maybe 1999 called, they said they want their look back, Take the looks apart however and that oversized denim jacket or big baggy jeans could be the next big thing in fashion as we close in on 2021. Seen at Xüly Bet, Bianca Saunders and Botter we’re predicting big denim energy in your near style future.
LACED IN LOGO
In 2020 Logo’s are just as groundbreaking as floral prints for spring. Thanks to the continuously growing streetwear craze and monogrammed mania currently dominating menswear brand stamped tees, sweat and tracksuits, dad hats and crossbody bags are everywhere. Presenting fresher take on the trend, Virgil Abloh of Off-White, Martine Rose, and Telfar Clemens of Telfar offer logo casual separates suitable to be worn with both sneakers and hard bottom shows. Take the Martine Rose (middle) look for example. Replace the jeans with a pair of dressier a pair of slacks and you have a non-traditional after-5 look.
AT YOUR NECK
We’re sure you’ll want to bundle up as the temperature drops but that doesn’t mean you have to don a heavy coat. For a hot box like me (it doesn’t take much for me to break a sweat), a simple neck covering can do the trick in October and much of November. For Fall 2020, we spotted scarves at Nicholas Daley, A-Cold-Wall, Martine Rose in knitted, bomber jackets, and quilted forms. The most interesting being the latter from Nicholas Daley. Based in London, Daley's quilted scarf with a pocket is a cool, wearable rendition of what Martine Rose sent down the catwalk for fall: a bomber jacket as a scarf.
HOLD THE SLEEVES
No sleeves for fall are undoubtedly a head-turner especially as the weather changes. Spring in spirit, yes. But, with a little imagination and some balls to experiment with layering you too could master the sleeveless look for Fall. At Wales Bonner, Kenneth Ize, LaQuan Smith shirts with no sleeves made their debut during February's fashion weeks. The most revealing came from LaQuan Smith who showed a black see-through tank with black pants and boots.
TOP HANDLE BAGS
All credit due to the unisex Telfar Leather Shopper for reviving the carry-all tote bag. Now the menswear market has seen bags rise a key accessories thanks to the crossbody bag trend. Big enough for your essentials only, 5 of the currently trending crossbody styles could fit in one of these tremendous totes carried at the Off-White, Telfar, and A-Cold-Wall Fall 2020 runway shows. Big enough to double as an overnight bag, these top handle bags won't offer you the freedom of having access to both hands, but you will have more space to tote around your essentials.
